About the Book

A handsome album of b&w photographs illustrating the medieval wooden stave churches and, in great detail, their internal curvilinear and zoomorphic carved decoration.  An eighty-page introductory essay covering design and construction techniques, decorative metalwork and door furniture, and the background dragon mythology of the Norse culture precedes 110 large b&w plates.  An Appendix provides a detailed Gazetteer of, not only the famous churches, but many lesser-known sites and a location map.  Text and captions are in German.  214 pages.  Hardback in slightly worn dustjacket.  Generally good clean condition with no inscriptions or library markings.  This copy includes a newspaper clipping of the Ringebu church and a short article on church wood preservation.  Cat No 3916
