About the Book

A detailed survey of the raised wooden gable-roofed structures that have, for 200 years or more, served as granaries in the region around Porto but which, today, stand largely empty yet serve as historic reminders of ancient agricultural practices.  Each wooden granary tapers to its base which is then mounted on a tall stone pedestal to deter ingress by rats.  There are slight variations in construction and design with a few showing carved decoration.  They bear comparison with the  hórreos of North-West Spain.  This book includes many excellent colour photographs of extant examples accompanied by detailed architectural drawings showing their external and internal structure.  Includes a bibliography.  Text is in Portuguese.  Hardback.  110 pages.  In perfect new condition.  Cat No 4640
