About the Book
Il Grano e le Macine: La Macinazione di Cereali in Alto Adige dall'Antichita al Medioevo [Grain and Millstones: The Milling of Cereals in South Tyrol from Antiquity to the Middle Ages]
The cultivation of cereals, the evolution of grinding techniques and tools are one of the central themes of the history of food, which the exhibition, organized by the Provincial Museum of Castel Tirolo, investigates in the South Tyrolean context. The survey and classification by type of all the millstones present in the area allows us to follow their use, starting from the most ancient and elementary saddle millstones of the Stone Age, up to the gear millwork driven by a water wheel, in use in the Middle Ages. The technical analysis of the artefacts is completed by studies of palaeobotany and agricultural archaeology, which help to focus on the development of agriculture in South Tyrol. Illustrated throughout with drawings, maps and b&w photographs. Includes several comprehensive bibliographies citing much international source material. Text in Italian. Large paperback. 144 pages.
