About the Book

An extraordinarily meticulous study of supposed prehistoric megaliths found in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica (present-day Libya) by Henry Cowper during two visits in 1895 and 1896.  He travelled far and wide recording and photographing these structures.  He also reports on the local people, their customs, and their culture, as observed at the end of C19th.  Almost 100 photographs accompany the text along with maps and site plans including a fold-out plan of the streets of old Tripoli.  It later transpired that the upright stone structures he so carefully analysed were, in fact, the remains of large Roman olive presses.  The book is, however, a fascinating archaeological travelogue with information on sites that more recently have been degraded or disappeared entirely.  Hardback in green cloth with gilt spine title.  Previous owner’s stamp inside front cover, otherwise in very good clean condition.  A scarce book.  Cat No A255
