About the Book

The first book to give a thorough description and appraisal of the undisputed seven Tournai fonts found in southern England where they had been  transported from their manufacturing base in Belgium despite being carved from heavy black carboniferous limestone (incorrectly termed 'marble').  Their intricate carvings and subject matter are detailed alongside large b&w plates.  Includes an appendix listing identified Tournai fonts in France, Belgium and Germany.  A bibliography follows.  Hardback.  32 pages.  Neat gift inscription to half-title page, some cover corner rubbing, slight foxing to prelims and occasional spotting, but still in good condition for its age.  This copy includes, as a loose insert, an even earlier ten-page account of the same fonts taken from the Journal of the British Archaeological Association, Vol 50, 1894.  Cat No 4754
