‘The Burning of the Pagan Books’

The Archbishop of Canterbury has now added his support to the campaign to secure the return from Spain of one of the nine large tapestries commissioned by Henry VIII in the 1530’s following his break from Rome, all of which were considered lost.  One, ‘The Burning of the Pagan Books’ was rediscovered in 2018 and is now for sale with a price tag of £4.5m.  Rev Justin Welby described the Flemish masterpiece as “an extraordinary and rare piece of art, it should come home”.  If the funds can be raised a home is waiting for it at Auckland Castle, the former residence of the Bishops of Durham.  Read more about the tapestry here: Saint Paul and the Burning of Pagan Books: a Tapestry for Henry VIII
