Greece’s Parthenon Repatriation Demands Fuelled by British Museum Thefts
The recently reported extensive thefts of jewels and historic artefacts from the British Museum, and the lack of action by the Museum’s senior management in the face of evidence supplied by an expert independent whistle blower, has led Greece’s culture minister Lina Mendoni to question the Museum’s assertion that it is a secure custodian of the Parthenon sculptures and re-ignited demands for their return to Greece having been removed from the Acropolis by the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in 1805.
