Fire Damages Easter Island (Rapa Nui) Statues
On 6th October 2022 a wild fire burnt deep into the soil on the upper slopes of the Rana Raraku volcano where a significant number of Moai statues stand and are now cracked and damaged by the heat. This cannot be undone and is a warning to guard in the future against anthropogenic harm to a fragile environment. This is the original local report (in Spanish) with photographs. We have books for sale on Rapa Nui including a World Monuments Fund report on its conservation and a beautiful exhibition catalogue of Easter Island art, as well as a large volume Proceedings of a Conference organised by the Easter Island Foundation in 2005.
