Ancient Looted Gold Ring Returned to Rhodes
In May 2022 a Mycenaean gold ring looted during WWII was returned to the island of Rhodes where it had been excavated in 1927. Having re-surfaced in the USA it was purchased in the 1950’s by Hungarian biophysicist Georg von Bekesy who bequeathed it to the Nobel Foundation in Sweden. Once its provenance was established, Swedish authorities had no hesitation in returning it to Rhodes where it will, once again, go on public display.
The ancient history of Rhodes is eloquently described and illustrated in full colour in the locally published guide ‘Ancient Rhodes: 2400 Years’. Click the link to buy a copy.
