About the Book

A useful and attractive guide to the controversy that surrounded the restoration of the Abbey completed in 1879 which pitted protagonists in favour of the preservation of an important historic monument against those seeking to remodel the building as an effective place of worship and which spurred William Morris to write in protest and, ultimately, initiate his founding of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).  Illustrated in colour with photographs of the Abbey's internal features, archive documents, site plans and architectural drawings.  Bibliography.  Paperback.  36 pages.  This is the substantially enlarged and revised 2012 edition of an earlier 1988 shorter pamphlet.  This copy includes an additional short guide to the 'Trees of Tewkesbury Abbey' as a loose insert.   New condition.  Cat No 3911
