About the Book
Temple Gateways in South India: The Architecture and Iconography of the Cidambaram Gopuras
In the South Indian style of temple architecture, the gopura, or tower-gateway, is of exceptional significance and, after the twelfth century, came to supersede the central shrine as the largest and architecturally the most important building in the temple. The author presents a detailed description of the architecture and iconography of the four outer gateways of the great Chidambaram temple in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This is the first such study undertaken on any of these buildings and is complemented by drawings, site plans and 180 b&w photographs, mostly taken by the author himself. Includes a Bibliography. Hardback. 182 pages. Slight foxing to end-papers, otherwise good clean condition in a good dustjacket. Cat No 4130
