About the Book

An early picture postcard, published in Swindon, depicting Avebury as it may originally have appeared.  The illustration is after an original drawing by C19th antiquary John Britton.  The caption reads:  "The Great Stone Circle, it is said, was approached by two avenues of 200 stones each, which took a sinuous course south-east and south-west and represented a snake transmitted through a circle."   This card is postmarked 1909 and has been sent to a naval rating aboard a vessel docked in Malta.  Later monochrome versions of this card exist, but this is the less common early coloured version.  In good condition.  Cat No A276
