About the Book
A Ship of the Roman Period, from Blackfriars, in the City of London
The Blackfriars ship was a Romano-British sailing barge of the second century AD which was accidentally sunk in the Thames while carrying a cargo of building stone. Its construction is not typical of Roman Mediterranean shipbuilding but more akin to that of the Celtic Iron Age peoples of north-west Europe. This report contains many excellent drawings reconstructing the hull timber layout and sectional drawings of its location in the Thames mud. Black-and-white photographs depicting excavation sequences and small finds accompany the text. Small finds - pottery, wooden objects, shoes and a coin of Domitian are illustrated and described. Final chapters deal with tree-ring dating and present-day preservation of the timbers. Paperback. 60 pages plus fold-out plan of timbers. Previous owner's name neatly inscribed on title page and an obvious scratch to the rear cover, otherwise good condition. Cat No 3925
