About the Book

The first book to tackle authentication of paintings from a purely chemical standpoint.  Attribution and date are decided by a close chemical analysis of minute pigment specimens.  Each chapter deals with a category of pigments grouped by colour with the chemical composition of each defined and methods of preparation and detection described.  The two concluding chapters deal with painting restoration and with  examination by ultra-violet or x-ray.  Hardback.  106 pages.  Forty-six b&w plates (including microphotographs).  A large fold-out table of pigment chronology established by the author is inserted at the rear.  This copy has a signed dedication from the author to London restorer David Drown.  Good condition in a worn and laminated dustjacket.  Cat No 3314
