About the Book

An early but rather superficial description of the Roman town of Silchester, its layout, itsbuildings and their overlay on the earlier Iron Age oppidum of Caleva. Includes notes on mosaics and samian ware discovered during early excavations. Davis, rather surprisingly, also devotes several pages to the theories of Charles Darwin on earthworm populations and the quantity of soil they are able to ingest and circulate across a site like Silchester. Hardback. 62 pages. Some edgewear to boards otherwise very good clean tight condition. Note: This is the original 1898 edition not a modern paperback facsimile. Cat No 1936.
