About the Book

To mark the exhibition 'Change and Decay: The Future of Our Churches', and to draw attention to the neglected topic of preservation of large historic sculptural monuments in English and Welsh churches and cathedrals, the V&A reprinted the 1869 'Report of the Sepulchral Monuments Committee' originally published by the Society of Antiquaries.  A short Introduction by Roy Strong precedes a lengthy catalogue of notable monuments arranged by personage commemorated - royalty, statesmen, churchmen, scholars, poets, artists, soldiers, merchants, benefactors etc.  This, in turn, is followed by a descriptive gazetteer arranged by county.  Period covered is from the Middle ages up to 1750.  Still a useful reference.  Large paperback.  60 pages.  Cover shows some signs of wear but internally in good clean condition.  Cat No  4678e
