About the Book

This is an exhaustive analysis of several thousand ceramic fragments recovered during  excavations in an elite residential area of the important medieval city of Vijayanagara in the present-day Indian state of Karnataka. The author compares ceramics from the Noblemen’s Quarter with collections made from the city’s main Islamic Quarter and a lower status residential area known as the East Valley. Differences in ceramic frequencies and wares in these three areas demonstrate the relevance of ceramic analysis to the study of the social, cultural and spatial organization of ancient settlements.  Illustrated with maps, site plans and a huge number of drawings of diagnostic pottery types.  Bibliography.  Hardback.  243 pages.  Good clean condition.  Cat No 4301
