About the Book

A magnificent auction catalogue to a single lot.  The Ottheinrich Bible is incomparably the finest surviving manuscript of the German vernacular Bible originally commissioned around 1430 by Ludwig VII.  In 1530 the Count Palatine Ottheinrich acquired the Bible and commissioned the artist Mathis Gerung to complete the sequence of miniatures, which until then extended only as far as the Gospel of St. Mark. Gerung finished the work in 1530–31. The Bible contains 146 miniatures and 294 ornamented initials.  In the 19th century it was split into eight volumes. The Bavarian State Library acquired three of these volumes in 1950, and the remaining five for an undisclosed price in 2007 through a private treaty sale leading to their withdrawal from this auction.  Large format paperback.  68 pages.  Full description of provenance, text, illumination, miniature subjects and previous literature.  Twenty-eight full colour plates.  New condition. Cat No 3240
