About the Book
Memoirs Chiefly Illustrative of the History and Antiquities of the County and City of Oxford
A collection of Conference Papers from a Meeting held at Oxford in 1850 and originally published in issues of the Society's quarterly journal but gathered here as a single memorial volume for those attendees not members of the Society. Topics include - the Probable Date of Stonehenge (wrong by 2000 years as it turns out!); a Biography of Geoffrey of Monmouth; Silchester Roman Settlement; Oxford Castle; Oxford Civil War Defences; the Stained Glass of New College Chapel Oxford; the Sepulchral Monuments in Oxford Cathedral; and the Architecture of Dorchester Abbey. Illustrated with many engravings - a highlight is a large fold-out plan of Silchester. Hardback. 266 pages. Other than a donation bookplate and some spotting to the initial and final pages, the book is in very good conditon for its age. Cat No A248
