About the Book
Mangazeya - Мангазея
Documents the history of the lost Siberian trading city of Mangazeya discovered by archaeologists in 1967. The city was formally founded in 1601 (although dendrochronology dated some structures to the 1590's) and flourished primarily by trading furs via the Northern sea route; a route closed by the Tsar's edict of 1619 for fear of too aggressive English penetration into his Russian domain. From then on the city declined until it was finally abandoned after a catastrophic fire in 1678. This book is the work of the leading researcher into Mangazeya and Professor at the Arctic Research Institute in St Petersburg. It has a signed dedication from him on the title page. Illustrated. Text is in Russian. Paperback. 128 pages. Good clean condition. This copy also includes, as a loose insert, a lengthy letter (in Russian and English) from the author to a research colleague referencing the English contacts with remote Russian trading posts in the C17th.
