About the Book

A fabulously detailed account of the very well-known Neolithic cairn of Newgrange in the Boyne Valley, and the lesser-known Cairn T at Loughcrew on the opposite side of County Meath, both of which have elaborate passages and inscribed stones.  The author explores two principal theses: 1) The passages are indisputably aligned to the winter solstice but that, in the intervening millennia, a slight shift in the obliquity of the elliptic no longer permits the sun to penetrate to the exact point it once did. 2) The inscriptions depict not only the sun, but the inverse and reverse spirals signify the decrease and increase of day length either side of the solstice.  Many excellent colour photographs, line drawings, and diagrams are employed to elucidate the author’s arguments.  Includes a bibliography.  Hardback.  56 pages.  In near new condition.  Cat No 4732
