About the Book

The dense assemblage of neolithic passage tombs in Co. Sligo has a distinctive place within the Irish passage tomb tradition as it is the only area where the full range of monument constructions is clearly represented, from the earliest small boulder circle monuments to vast cairn covered monuments.  This doctoral thesis from the University of Stockholm examines every aspect of these tombs from their dating and chronology, their evolution from simple stone erections to more complex portal structures, and their siting for maximum visibility interacting with the landscape in which they stand.  In particular the well-known collection of large tombs of the Carrowmore Megalithic cemetery on the Cúil Irra headland is subjected to detailed analysis.  A  long complete corpus of Irish Passage Tomb Tradition (IPTT), compiled from extensive fieldwork, is included as an illustrated appendix.  Large paperback.  256 pages.  Good clean condition.  Cat No 4452
