About the Book

This book describes the unique collection of raw materials, tools and the exquisite Japanese lacquer collection held by Kew whose origin dates from the report ‘The Lacquer Industry of Japan’ commissioned in 1881by the British Government. The original report is reproduced here in facsimile and is preceded by essays on the history, botany and chemistry of lacquers accompanied by a wealth of excellent colour photographs and archive documents.  An appendix provides a complete illustrated catalogue of the historic Japanese lacquer objects held in Kew’s collection with notes on their purpose and Japanese nomenclature.  Paperback.  100 pages.  Very good clean condition.  Cat No 4186
