A scientific report on two well-known versions of the same painting by Hans Holbein, one in the possession of the Company of Barbers, and the other in the possession of the Guild of Surgeons, and thought to represent the union of their two antecedents in 1540; the latter considered the later version.  However, x-ray analysis of the latter revealed an underpainting of a preliminary cartoon throwing the chronology of the two into doubt.  14 pages plus four b& plates.  Minor signs of age, otherwise in good condition.  Cat No 4720
