About the Book

A large-size volume dedicated entirely to the large Chalice of Antioch, one of the most remarkable examples of early liturgical silver ever found.  It was discovered by workmen in 1910 and purchased by antiquities collector André Kouchakji and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It is silver gilt and decorated with elaborate repoussé of vines, birds, and portraits of Christ and his apostles.  Full-page colour frontispiece of the chalice and many b&w photographs of the decorative detail.  Includes a bibliography.  This is the condensed version of a very large two volume work of 450 pages previously published in 1923.  Hardback.  22 pages.  Slight bumping to corners, otherwise in good clean condition.  Cat No A258
