The Govan Sarcophagus: The Shrine of S. Constantine
The earliest description of the C9th sandstone sarcophagus recovered from the Govan graveyard in 1853 and thought to commemorate St Constantine with its depiction of a horseman, deer and intricate interlaced carvings. Written by the first person to take an academic interest in the sarcophagus this account explores in detail the symbolism of the carvings and makes comparisons with other known examples of similar style and date. Highlights are the two large fold-out drawings of the sarcophagus decorations. Hardback. 24 pages. Very good clean condition. Scarce. This copy contains the attractive personal bookplate of Edinburgh librarian and Gaelic bibliophile Dr Hew Morrison. Cat No 3301
