About the Book

A lengthy review of the second season of excavations conducted by the Polish Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology at the site of the ancient Nubian city of Faras in advance of its submergence during the construction of the Aswan Dam.  Chapters on the recovery of Pharaonic and Meroitic inscribed tablets precede the main section which focusses on the unearthing of a large lost Christian cathedral whose preservation was such that it yielded a large number of colourful frescoes dating from the C8th, the bulk of which were removed for display in museums in Warsaw and Khartoum.  Illustrated throughout with 146 colour and b&w photographs.  Text in French.  Large hardback.  248 pages.  Lacks dustjacket, otherwise in good clean condition.   Cat No 4450
