About the Book

Born in Constantinople in 1611 Ewlijā Çelebi was one of the world’s greatest travellers and recorded his journeys in a monumental ten volume work entitled Seyahatname (Book of Travels) and memorably inscribed Qur'anic verses on buildings he visited, many of which are still extant.  He was a participant in the Ottoman conquest of Crete in 1669 and this PhD thesis uses excerpts from Çelebi’s accounts to paint a picture of life and religion on Crete post-invasion.  Paperback.  102 pages.  Seven b&w plates.  Two fold-out maps.  Extensive Bibliography.  Text in German.  Minor signs of wear.  Cat No 2897
