About the Book

The main theme of this book is to recapture some sense of the religious art destroyed during the iconoclastic riots of 1566 in the Low Countries.  The author shows that some of the medieval art supposedly destroyed in the riots still survives.  The pre-Reformation church architecture of the Netherlands and northern Belgium is examined according to its regional and structural varieties and the identifiable works of known architects.  Detailed individual chapters on fonts, pulpits, choir screens, organ cases, altars, paintings, stained glass, statues, textiles, shrines and censers make this an essential reference work. Illustrated throughout. Hardback.  244 pages  In good clean condition.  Cat No 4593
