About the Book

The most thorough description available of the purpose and structure of the Christian catacombs beneath Rome dating from 2nd to 4th centuries and revered at the time, then lost, only to be rediscovered in the C17th and the subject of systematic excavations during the C19th when interest peaked.  Throughout the first half of C20th new discoveries were made and in 1956 an important and completely unknown catacomb was found under the Via Latina.  A lengthy essay, a location map, and a bibliography precedes 68 colour and b&w plates illustrating the interiors of many of the catacombs including those with wall decorations.  Hardback.  Very good clean condition in a dustjacket showing only the slightest signs of wear.  Cat No 4228
