About the Book
Canopus, Menouthis, Aboukir: Pagan Memories, Christian Memories, Battle Memories
The greater portion of this book deals with the archaeology and mythology of the ancient Nile delta settlement of Canopus during the Ptolemaic, Hellenistic and Roman periods. A second section focusses on the adjacent settlement of Menouthis and the transition from the worship of Isis and Osiris to Christian adherence during the VIth and VIIth centuries, The final chapter relates the sea battles between Admiral Nelson’s fleet and the French navy in the Bay of Aboukir in 1798, the battle between the French and Turks in 1799, and the eventual capitulation of Egypt to the British in 1801. Highlights of the book are the coloured fold-out interpretative maps of Alexandria, Canopus, Menouthis and the Bay of Aboukir, as they appeared during the periods covered by the text. Published the previous year in French this is the translation into English by Dr Granville, the President of the Alexander Archaeological Group. Paperback. 87 pages.
