About the Book

'Bone and Horn Carving: A Pictorial History' is the correct title (Amazon's title is nonsense).  The author discusses the use of bone and horn during the Stone age and then proceeds to the Middle Ages and Renaissance when bone and horn were used to make decorative boxes, handles and powder horns.  The art of scrimshaw is touched upon, as is Napoleonic prisoner of war carvings of ships and sweetheart gifts.  Chapters on elaborate Asian carvings and the more primitive work by Eskimos and Lapps close the book.  Hardback.  166 pages. In good condition with no inscritions or library markings.  Cat No 4848
