A large photo album of eighty b&w plates of the decorated medieval tombstones (Stećci) unique to the western Balkans, Bosnia and Croatia in particular, and generally attributed to the period of Bogomilist gnostic religious practice (although not universally accepted as such) and now inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.  A twenty-eight page introductory essay on the history of research into these monuments, their variety of shapes, their decorative symbolism and epitaphs, precedes the plates with an accompanying distribution map.  Bibliography.  Text in English.  Large hardback in a worn original dustjacket.  Internally clean with no inscriptions or library markings.  Cat No 3894
