A short and highly personal account of the current state of archaeological studies by the Research Professor at the Archaeological Institute of Copenhagen University with reference to his own work in Denmark and comparisons with archaeological activities internationally.  The structure is thematic – with chapters on `The place and its Context', `Interpretations and Society', `Archaeology and History', ‘Landscapes and Living Conditions’, and ‘Archaeological Institutions’. It does not attempt to present any single archaeological tradition and cites examples from Europe, the Mediterranean and the Near East.
